Dieses Buch erschien zuerst 1867 und war eine Pioniertat.
Um 1860 zog der Author, der sich fuer Slave Songs interessierte, ueber die Plantagen, liess sich von den Sklaven ihre Lieder vorsingen und schrieb sie auf.
Das hatte vorher noch niemand getan.
Das Ergebnis ist aus zwei Gruenden faszinierend:
Zum einen gibt ein ca. 30-seitiges Vorwort einen guten Einblick in die schwarze Gesangstradition von damals, zum anderen dokumentiert das Buch, wie sich Lieder auf ihrer Wanderschaft von Plantage zu Plantage weiterentwickelt haben. Man findet manches uns bekannte Spiritual in einer Version, die noch etwas ungeschliffen wirkt, und man begreift, wie sehr Spirituals eine kollektive Leistung sind.
Das Buch enthaelt die Transkriptionen von 186 Songs. Ich stelle dieses Buch trotzdem hier unter "Buecher" ein, weil es eher ein kulturelles Dokument als ein Notenbuch ist.

Originally published in 1867, this book is a collection of songs of African-American slaves. A few of the songs were written after the emancipation, but all were inspired by slavery. The wild, sad strains tell, as the sufferers themselves could, of crushed hopes, keen sorrow, and a dull, daily misery, which covered them as hopelessly as the fog from the rice swamps. On the other hand, the words breathe a trusting faith in the life after, to which their eyes seem constantly turned.

Beschreibung : Ein ganz besonderes Buch, das die Vergangenheit der schwarzen Sklaven in Amerika sehr lebendig werden laesst.
Das Buch besteht fast ausschliesslich aus historischen Erlebnisberichten, die vom Editor so angeordnet wurden, dass eine fluessig lesbare Beschreibung der Geschichte von der Verschiffung in Afrika bis kurz vor die Buergerrechtsbewegung entsteht.
Nur selten fuegt der Editor selbst einen verbindenden Absatz ein.
Unbedingt empfehlenswert!
Das Buch gibt es von mehreren Verlagen in verschieden aufwaendigen Ausgaben.

A number of books have been written for young people about slavery in the United States, but none could be more powerful and compelling than Lester's award-winning book. Lester uses the words of slaves and ex-slaves to tell this story.
